About Clues

Clues is a daily geography riddle. There's one mystery country and up to five clues, starting hard and getting easier. Guess after any clue. The fewer clues you need, the better your score.

Clues cover history, landmarks, food, language, wildlife and where the country sits on the map. The first clue is for experts, and by the fifth most people will know it. Share your score without giving the answer away.

Tips and strategy

  • Guess early. A wrong guess just reveals the next clue, so there's no harm in trying a hunch after clue one or two.
  • Narrow the region first. Climate, wildlife and language clues usually point to a continent before they point to a country.
  • Think about what's left out. If a clue mentions mountains but not the sea, the country might be landlocked.
  • Use the search box. Start typing and pick from the list, so spelling never costs you a guess.

Clues questions

How many clues are there?

Five, from hardest to easiest. You can guess as often as you like, and each wrong guess reveals the next clue.

What happens if I don't get it?

After the fifth clue you can reveal the answer. It counts as a played day but not a solved one.

What kind of clues are there?

Each puzzle mixes history, culture, language, food, nature and geography, so it rewards general knowledge as much as map skills.

When is the next country?

Every day at midnight UTC, the same for everyone.

About the map data

Geocade's map, borders and areas come from Natural Earth, a public-domain world map, with 194 countries. Borders count only where main territories touch on land, so overseas regions and sea crossings don't. Where a border or capital is disputed, we follow the most widely used convention and leave out cases that would make a puzzle unfair.
